Pierre (Paul Frankeur) and Jean (Laurent Terzieff) are two pilgrims who set off from Paris, walking along the Camino de Santiago to the ancient city of Santiago de Compostela in Spain. Shortly after their departure, they encounter a strange man in a black cloak (Alain Cuny) who foretells that they will have an affair with a prostitute and father a child. Along the way, Pierre and Jean traverse different times and spaces, meeting a variety of Catholic heretics, witnessing the mysterious forest rituals of Priscillian (Jean-Claude Carrière), and observing the duel between Jesuits and Jansenists. After arriving in Spain, they agree to watch over the donkeys and goods of two young men they meet on the road, who are being pursued for openly challenging the doctrine of the Trinity; one of them witnesses the manifestation of the Virgin Mary (Edith Scob) that very night. This film is inspired by the book "A History of Spanish Heretics" and won the Interfilm Award at the 1969 Berlin Film Festival.
