In July 1927, He Long led his troops in the Northern Expedition and defeated Zhang Zuolin's forces in Henan, achieving a great victory at Linying. Wang Jingwei, the chairman of the Wuhan National Government, secretly colluded with Chiang Kai-shek and ordered He Long to return to Wuhan. To win the hearts of the military, He Long was appointed commander of the 20th Army of the National Revolutionary Army. Soon after, Wang Jingwei plotted a rebellion within the 20th Army led by Tong Huaicai. Disregarding the advice of the military correspondent Bai Ying from the Nationalist Daily, He Long braved gunfire and rode out to quell the mutiny. He learned from the soldiers that Wang Jingwei had secretly released Yamada, a Japanese man stained with the blood of the Chinese people. He rushed to the docks, intercepted a cargo ship, and cleverly captured Yamada, who was hiding in a pile of coal. Wang Jingwei then instructed the wealthy gentlemen in Wuhan to bribe He Long heavily. At "Hongyun Lou," He Long, in front of them, threw priceless jewelry into the lake, shocking the wealthy elites. While Wang Jingwei loudly proclaimed "East Expedition against Chiang," he secretly confiscated the armed weapons of workers and arrested and slaughtered the working-class masses. He Long sternly reprimanded Wang Jingwei for his counter-revolutionary actions. Wang was at a loss for words and attempted to use a ruse to distract He Long's troops for the East Expedition. He Long played along with this scheme by inviting leaders of the CCP in the Two Lakes region to a tofu banquet. At the banquet hall, He Long ordered the confiscation of the weapons of the searching squad that had forcefully barged in and executed the squad leader. While the Communist Party was in distress, He Long remained loyal to the Party but was met with suspicion from Zhang Guotao, who believed He Long harbored ambitions of becoming an emperor and was therefore untrustworthy. His view was rebutted by Zhou Enlai. On the eve of the East Expedition, Zhou Enlai specifically came to see He Long off, and He Long expressed his revolutionary belief that "to truly save China, only the Communist Party can do it." He Long's nephew, Xue Rui, rushed from their hometown to cry about the persecution of He Long's family by reactionary armed forces, which enraged He Long. He thought of the East Expedition as a mission to rescue the common people of China alongside the Communist Party and restrained his personal feelings, commanding the troops to set off. The 20th Army docked at Jiujiang during their journey, where Zhou Enlai conveyed the central committee's resolution to He Long, stating that He's forces would be the main force for an armed uprising in Nanchang at the appropriate time, to which He Long gladly agreed. Wang Jingwei attempted to deceive He Long into going to Lushan but was rejected. He then sent assassins to kill He Long, which also failed. Left with no choice, Wang Jingwei tried to blow up bridges to impede He Long's troops, while simultaneously appointing He Long as the general commander of the Second Front Army in an attempt to win him over. Bai Ying, a military correspondent and spy of Chiang Kai-shek, also revealed her identity and lured He Long into cooperating with Chiang. Faced with the conspiracies of Chiang and Wang, He Long chose the revolutionary path, leading his troops to Nanchang and joining the ranks of the "August 1st" uprising.
