Sam (Billy Crudup) is a successful advertising company president. An accident took the life of his son Josh (Miles Heizer), plunging Sam into despair. He abandons everything he has and hides in his sailboat, living each day through heavy drinking. One day, Sam unexpectedly discovers some songs written by Josh before his death, which transport him back to the wonderful times when they shared a passion for music. Sam decides to let Josh's life continue through music and learns to play the songs his son wrote, performing them in bars. His heartfelt singing attracts a young man named Quentin (Anton Yelchin), and the two quickly hit it off, forming a band that performs Josh's compositions.
