Through the love stories between the cart worker Nie Fuxiang and the two women, Yan Hui and Zheng Xiulan, as well as the emotional entanglements between these two women and two men, Su Ran and Hai Wang, the story passionately celebrates the traditional virtues of the Chinese nation that emphasize deep feelings and integrity. It interprets the theme that interpersonal relationships cannot be disconnected from true emotions, which alone can unlock the hardest of hearts. The drama begins in the early 1960s, avoiding the ten years of turmoil during the Cultural Revolution, and extends to the late 20th century during the reform and opening-up period, expressing the necessity and importance of building a harmonious society through the changes of the times. The basic plot of the drama is as follows: Nie Fuxiang, who can barely read, is an ordinary worker at a transport company. Due to his unremarkable appearance, he has missed the prime age for marriage and remains a bachelor, with at least eight out of ten prospective brides refusing him. Yet, this cart worker forms an inexplicable bond with the young engineer Su Ran from the Tongzhou Institute of Mechanics. One snowy day, when Nie Fuxiang suffers an appendicitis attack and collapses on the roadside, Su Ran happens to be on her way home and takes him to the hospital, saving his life. Soon after, Su Ran is robbed, and coincidentally, Nie Fuxiang comes to her rescue again. From then on, the two begin to spend time together. Seeing that Nie Fuxiang is single, Su Ran arranges for him to meet Zheng Xiulan. The two hit it off immediately and soon fall deeply in love. However, after a short time, Su Ran, who is gravely ill, is wrongfully imprisoned. This situation could easily be resolved if her colleague Liu Jun clarified the situation, but Liu Jun, being narrow-minded, refuses to speak up for fear of getting into trouble. Just as Nie Fuxiang is preparing to marry, Zheng Xiulan suddenly disappears. When he finds her brother's house, he learns that Zheng Xiulan has already married someone else. Devastated, Nie Fuxiang is left in confusion. In the prison hospital, Su Ran sees how downcast Nie Fuxiang is after Zheng Xiulan's departure and gives him a jade pendant, asking him to be with Yan Hui if he doesn't mind. Nie Fuxiang initially hesitates, but overwhelmed by Su Ran's tearful plea, he reluctantly takes the pendant and agrees. Later, a disheveled Zheng Xiulan comes to Nie Fuxiang in the middle of the night, expressing her sorrow of parting. It turns out that her brother is trying to force her to marry another man. At this moment, Nie Fuxiang is at a loss, torn between the fragile Yan Hui and the beloved Zheng Xiulan. Zheng Xiulan accidentally learns about Su Ran's request for Nie Fuxiang and, in pain, decides to hastily marry another man, Sun Haiwang. Yan Hui learns of this and rushes to plead with Zheng Xiulan not to leave Nie Fuxiang, but Zheng Xiulan tearfully refuses her. Lost in a haze, Yan Hui doesn’t know which way to turn; she doesn’t want to burden Nie Fuxiang, yet reality forces her to accept him. As Nie Fuxiang becomes involved with Yan Hui, the differences in their culture and personalities result in heart-wrenching and painful struggles for both. As time goes by, they finally welcome a son and a daughter together. After years, the wronged Su Ran is vindicated and released from prison. He wants to see Yan Hui and his own children, but to avoid disturbing the tranquil lives that Yan Hui and Nie Fuxiang have built over decades, he goes to the United States at his parents' urging and hastily forms another family. Twenty years later, the mainland of the motherland is thriving. A gray-haired Su Ran, sent back to the mainland by a major American company, unexpectedly learns that he has a son, Su Wei, born from his year-long relationship with a woman, and that Su Wei's girlfriend is actually the granddaughter of Yan Hui. Not wanting to disrupt Yan Hui and Nie Fuxiang's peaceful lives, Su Ran reluctantly tells Nie Fuxiang about the situation through his classmate Liu Zilin. This news hits Nie Fuxiang like a bomb, leaving him bewildered. Su Wei's nanny in the U.S. discovers this information and informs Su Ran that Su Wei may not actually be his biological son. To protect Su Wei and his granddaughter from the impact of this shocking news, Su Ran searches extensively and finally finds Su Wei's mother, Li Yanhua. However, Li Yanhua refuses to acknowledge that Su Wei is her child with someone else, valuing her own reputation and status. Ultimately, Su Ran's true feelings move Li Yanhua, and she reveals the real situation that has been buried in her heart for decades. After the storm, Nie Fuxiang finally returns to Zheng Xiulan's side, hoping to accompany her as she suffers from a terminal illness with the deep love he has always harbored. At this time, the gray-haired Yan Hui gazes in disbelief at Su Ran, who has returned, and cannot help but fall into his arms. But suddenly, the thought of Nie Fuxiang, who had quietly left the jade pendant behind, comes to her mind, causing her to push Su Ran away and run into the storm, calling out, "Xiángzi, where are you!"
