Professor Higashi Seizō (played by Hideo Higashino) of the First Surgery Department at Naniwa University is about to retire. Associate Professor Saizen Goro (played by Jiro Tamiya), who possesses excellent surgical skills and enjoys high popularity among medical staff, is the strongest candidate for the next professorship. Coming from a poor background, Saizen has an extraordinary ambition for fame and fortune, which leads to dissatisfaction from Professor Higashi. To impede Saizen's path, Higashi plans a nationwide selection for his successor. Facing immense pressure, Saizen, with the strong financial support of his father-in-law Saizen Aichi (played by Kenjiro Ishiyama) and the Osaka City North District Medical Association, fiercely competes for the professorship. Meanwhile, a stomach cancer patient is assigned to Saizen. However, disregarding the advice of his colleague Miki Shūji (played by Takahiro Tamura), who urges him to prioritize the patient, Saizen recklessly performs the surgery himself, ultimately getting caught up in the whirlpool of a medical accident... This film is adapted from the novel of the same name by Yasunari Kawabata.
