The story takes place in 19th century Berlin, where Heinrich (played by Christian Friedel) is a young, romantic, and melancholic poet. Heinrich deeply believes that love can conquer death, and in the face of true love, any obstacle is powerless. He hopes to commit suicide with his beloved cousin Marie (played by Sandra Hüller) to witness their feelings, but when faced with death, Marie hesitates. Later, Heinrich encounters a woman named Henriette (played by Birte Schnoeink), who is married to a businessman consumed by work. Heinrich and Henriette are mutually attracted to each other, and at the same time, Henriette discovers that she has an incurable disease and does not have long to live.
