This drama is adapted from the Douban Read serialized novel "Her and Her Islands," written by Yi Nan. The decisive matriarch Qiao Haiyun (played by Song Chunli) established a rule that everyone must return home for the New Year, a tradition that has never been broken until the most honest third generation, Li Yijin (played by Ma Sichun), suddenly breaks the tradition and spends the New Year at her boyfriend's home, sparking family conflicts. Qiao Haiyun has three daughters: the eldest, Meng Mingwei (played by Xu Fan), is not her biological daughter and feels inferior due to her limp, so she wishes her daughter Li Yijin to succeed, leading to a very tense relationship between them. However, they eventually understand each other's hardships and realize that maintaining an appropriate distance is the key to a healthy mother-daughter relationship; the second daughter, Meng Wanqing (played by Liang Jing), and her top student daughter, Tao Shuna (played by Sun Qian), are the perfect mother-daughter duo. Yet, they inadvertently discover each other's secrets, and the process of re-understanding each other also leads to a re-examination of themselves; the youngest, Meng Yi'an (played by Li Xiaoran), resembles Qiao Haiyun the most—strong and independent—who doesn't want to become a female powerhouse like her mother. However, coincidentally, she walks the same path as her mother, and the difficulty of balancing career and family gradually helps her understand her mother from back then. The three generations of women in the Meng family are like islands, though they are far apart, they support and coexist with each other.
