16-year-old beautiful girl Abel (Linda Darnell) leaves her oppressive family and moves to London to join a man named Bruce (Jefferson Pascal). Soon, the young couple has spent all their savings. To make a living, Bruce becomes a smuggler at sea, while Abel accidentally ends up in prison, where she shockingly discovers she is pregnant with Bruce's child. With the help of the robber Jack (John Russell), Abel escapes from prison and is sold to a theater. There, she meets the Duke of Radcliffe (Richard Greene), and they quickly get married, making Abel the Duchess. Just at this critical moment, Bruce reappears in Abel's life, demanding custody of his child.
