French literature teacher Gillman (played by Fabrice Luchini) assigns his students a weekly journal, asking them to accurately document their weekend experiences. Among many dull assignments, Gillman unexpectedly discovers the exceptional writing of 16-year-old Claude (played by Ernst Umhauer). Claude is a quiet observer, accustomed to sitting in the last row of the classroom. His assignment is about voyeurism—telling the story of how he secretly enters a friend’s home to observe their family's life. Gillman is deeply captivated by the words, reigniting his long-dormant literary passion. He decides to tutor the talented Claude individually, encouraging him to unleash his creativity, and shares Claude's writings with his wife, Jenna (played by Kristin Scott Thomas). However, as the adults read, they gradually forget the boundary between fiction and reality, oblivious to the fact that their own doors are wide open... French auteur François Ozon has previously stunned the world cinema landscape with his dark and gripping works like "8 Women" and "Swimming Pool." After heartwarming and artistic films such as "5x2" and "In My Room," his new film "The Piano Teacher" returns to the suspenseful thriller genre he excels in. The movie is adapted from the Spanish play "The Boy in the Last Row," and the director skillfully weaves together voyeuristic literature with elusive reality, challenging the moral boundaries of desire with a seemingly real yet illusory and layered narrative. This film has been nominated for six César Awards, won the FIPRESCI Prize at the Toronto International Film Festival and the Golden Shell for Best Film at the San Sebastián International Film Festival, and was selected as one of the Best Films of the Year in Europe.
