In New York, Dr. Bertram Pincus (played by Ricky Gervais), a London dentist, struggles with social interactions and is selfish and cynical. After a near-death experience during a colon surgery, where he is clinically dead for 7 minutes, he wakes up with the ability to communicate with ghosts. Overwhelmed by persistent hauntings from various spirits, Bertram encounters Frank (played by Greg Kinnear), a ghost who was a public relations expert in life. To find peace, Bertram agrees to help Frank's widow, archaeology expert Gwen (played by Téa Leoni), stop her upcoming marriage to human rights lawyer Richard (played by Billy Campbell). As he interacts with Gwen, Bertram finds himself gradually falling in love; meanwhile, although Gwen and Richard's wedding is successfully called off, Frank’s wish to settle his earthly ties remains unfulfilled. Additionally, the pleas from multiple ghosts for Bertram to help them accomplish their last wishes become increasingly overwhelming, leaving the typically self-centered Bertram at a loss... The film won the Ohio Central Critics Association Award for Best Underrated Film and the Satellite Award for Best Actor (Ricky Gervais).
