In a certain year of the Qing Dynasty, the barefoot kid Guan Fengyao (played by Aaron Kwok) enters the provincial city alone, being utterly impoverished, with only his martial arts skills and his father’s old friend Duan Qingyun (played by David Chiang) from the dye house "Si Ji Zhi" to rely on. The situation in the provincial city is quite unstable, with the master of Tianlongfang, Ka Hebu (played by Cheng Joi), dominating a territory due to his banner man status, utilizing a bustling arena to recruit household servants and thugs. The newly appointed county magistrate Yuan Tianyou (played by Cheung Siu-fai) and the teacher (played by Chin Siu-ho) want to eliminate Ka Hebu but are ineffective due to their unstable footing. Guan Fengyao unexpectedly encounters the lady owner of Si Ji Zhi, Bai Xiaojun (played by Maggie Cheung), and the teacher's daughter Xiao Lian (played by Wu Chien-lien), and eventually meets Duan Qingyun, who has hidden in the dye house under a new name to evade capture and has developed feelings for Bai Xiaojun. Ka Hebu devises various schemes to annex Si Ji Zhi, and Guan Fengyao, unable to endure any longer, confronts him, only to be captured and exploited by Ka Hebu. Yuan Tianyou repeatedly suffers setbacks in his contest with Ka Hebu, even coercing Duan Qingyun to duel with him. Guan Fengyao rushes to rescue, but it is too late...
