Lin Daiyu (played by Sylvia Chang), who travels a long distance to seek refuge with her grandmother, reunites with her cousin Baoyu (played by Brigitte Lin). The two are carefree in their childhood, speak freely, and although they cause a commotion over a broken jade, it brings them closer together. As time passes, the siblings fall in love and trust each other with their hearts. However, their love is not accepted by their family. Wang Xifeng devises a scheme that leads Baoyu to marry Xue Baochai (played by Michiko Nishiwaki). Daiyu, in deep sorrow, passes away harboring resentment. Upon learning the truth, Baoyu abandons his family and seeks a life of solitude. This film won the Best Art Direction award at the 1978 Asia-Pacific Film Festival and the Golden Horse Awards. [Background] After failing in the independent film scene in Taiwan, director Li Hanxiang returned to the Shaw Brothers studio in Hong Kong. At that time, the popularity of "Dream of Red Mansions" was on the rise, yet the market was filled with crude and poorly made adaptations. The earlier adaptation by an obscure director at Shaw Brothers, another company’s "Awakening of the Dream of Red Mansions," and the even cruder "Spring Dream of Red Mansions" and "Spring in the Dream of Red Mansions" were all amateurish and rough, a true insult to Cao Xueqin's masterpiece. It was with this background that Li Hanxiang, deeply influenced by classical Chinese literature, decided to create a work of artistic quality that could match it. He boldly cast the lesser-known talents Sylvia Chang and Brigitte Lin, who had participated in a film training program in Taiwan. At the beginning of filming, Li Hanxiang temporarily exchanged the roles of Lin and Chang, an impulsive decision that made him the discoverer of Brigitte Lin's cross-dressing role.
