In the near future, brilliant scientist Will Caster (played by Johnny Depp) develops the most human-like artificial intelligence robot, "Pin." While he receives accolades from the scientific community, he also faces countless criticisms and attacks from opponents. After a meeting, Will is shot by a member of a radical organization. Although he narrowly escapes, the radioactive bullet gradually erodes his life. His wife and research partner, Evelyn (played by Rebecca Hall), is understandably heartbroken, but she and Will's friend Max (played by Paul Bettany) manage to upload Will's conscious data into a smart computer.
