The story takes place during World War II, when the war's artillery destroyed the homes that civilians relied on for survival, forcing them to embark on a journey of escape. During an enemy bombing, five-year-old Paulette (Brigitte Fossey) witnesses the death of her parents and beloved dog. In fear and shock, Paulette finds the body of her puppy, and just as she is heartbroken, a boy named Michel (Georges Poujouly) appears before her. Michel is moved by Paulette's tragic fate, persuading his parents to adopt the poor little girl and creating a grave for her puppy. However, nothing that Michel does can alleviate Paulette's pain. Seeing her sorrowful expression, Michel devises a plan. The two children collect the bodies of animals that died in the war and set up tombstones for them with stolen crosses, but what neither child anticipated was that this kind gesture would lead to their eventual separation.
