The wandering student, Shunji Takamura, one day gets into a fight with his brother over his future direction and, in a heated exchange, leaves home. Shortly after, he meets model Keiko Shirakawa, who has just finished a commercial shoot. Upon learning that Keiko is returning to Tokyo, Shunji decides to reach out to an acquaintance, Ken Yamamoto, who moved to the capital a few years ago, and he heads to Tokyo in her car. After parting ways with Keiko in Tokyo, Shunji visits Ken's apartment in Shinjuku, where he reunites with Ken and his sister Miki, who is visiting them, and they warmly welcome him. Shunji stays at Ken's place and begins working in street sales. A few days later, he writes a letter to his family to update them on his situation and to reassure them for now. Later, when Shunji tells Ken about meeting the famous model Keiko, Ken advises him to look for her to get a proper full-time job. Shunji faces rejection from the agency staff, but after a few days, he tracks down Keiko's whereabouts, gets introduced to Ken's job, and starts working at a snack bar. One night after closing, the master of the bar enjoys Shunji’s singing and decides to let him perform before customers starting the next day. Subsequently, when Keiko visits the bar, she asks Shunji to compose a song for her, prompting him to begin songwriting during his free time. Amidst all this, Shunji is reminded by the landlord about the overdue rent and discovers that half of the rent money he had given to Ken has gone missing. When he contacts Ken's company, he learns that Ken had quit a few days earlier. Meeting with Miki, he finds out that Ken had fallen ill and the rent money had been used for his medical expenses. Faced with the need for a substantial amount for Ken’s treatment, Shunji gets turned down when he asks the master for an advance. After explaining the situation to Keiko, she introduces him to a promoter. The promoter tells Shunji that if he likes the song he composes, he’ll pay him. Later, Shunji passionately performs before the two and gets paid for his song. With the money earned, Shunji returns to the apartment and learns from Ken that he wants to see the sea from their hometown. A few days later, Shunji, Miki, and Ken take a train back home. Upon exiting the station, the three reach a hill and walk towards a high vantage point. Miki, seeing the sea spread out before them, exclaims excitedly, "Look, it's the sea!" After reuniting with his family at home for the first time in a while, Shunji informs them of his decision to live in Tokyo again before he sets off back to the city.
