The film uses a reverse chronological approach to narrate a series of events that took place between Chen Yi and a young Luan Zhihong, who was only about ten years old at the time, illustrating the great characteristics of the revolutionary leader. A black "Audi" travels along a tree-lined avenue, picturesque scenery all around. Retired provincial cadre Li Zhihong returns to her hometown with her granddaughter at the invitation of the Mao Mountain area. After decades of absence, the significant changes in her hometown leave her deeply moved. A young mayor warmly welcomes them. Upon learning that the mayor's grandfather was the district chief Fan of Mao Mountain during that time, past memories flood back to Director Li's mind. In June 1938, Chen Yi led the New Fourth Army to establish a revolutionary base in the Mao Mountain area and launched anti-Japanese struggles. Just as everyone celebrated the victory of the Weigang ambush, Commander Xu was murdered. The battalion commander mistakenly believed it was the work of Nationalist district chief Fan, and was about to execute him when Chen Yi arrived just in time to personally untie him, greatly touching Chief Fan. In order to expand the united front, Commander Chen, with Chief Fan's recommendation, decided to unite with local businessman Ji Zhengang to co-establish the anti-Japanese general committee. Female warrior Lin Yun of the New Fourth Army's battle performance team and Li Zhihong were sent to persuade Ji Zhengang. The task was daunting, and Commander Chen gave Lin Yun his own pistol for self-protection. Ji Zhengang, having long admired Commander Chen's reputation, warmly welcomed the two. During the gathering, Lin Yun encountered her father's murderer—Yue Jiaqian, deputy chief of Ji Zhengang's self-defense regiment. Lin's desire for revenge led to the mission's failure, resulting in severe criticism from Commander Chen. Yue Jiaqian, driven by profit, colluded with bandit Tao Shuangyang to occupy Maolu and imprison the Ji couple, intending to seize their family property. Upon receiving this news, Commander Chen immediately dispatched troops for rescue. Lin and Li again sought the chance to redeem themselves. During Ji Zhengang's rescue, Lin Yun was secretly shot by Yue Jiaqian and tragically lost her life, leading Li Zhihong to use a grenade to kill Yue. Soon after, Ji Zhengang became the director of the anti-enemy committee for a certain area in Mao Mountain, and an anti-Japanese local government was established. Today, the Qianyuan Temple in Mao Mountain is renewed, contrasting sharply with its former appearance. Commander Chen expressed his feelings through poetry, and Daoist priest Hui was also moved by the New Fourth Army's strict military discipline. Eventually, Go brought them together as friends, and shortly after, the New Fourth Army's headquarters was established there. Qianyuan Temple became a thorn in the side of the Japanese invaders. After the New Fourth Army's Jiangnan Command moved to Shuixi Village, the Japanese army, led by Matsuno, burned down Qianyuan Temple, brutally killing Priest Hui and occupying Maolu. The tragic death of Priest Hui angered Chen Yi. The brutal ferocity of war and the moral dualities of human nature profoundly impacted Li Zhihong, and the trials of blood and fire transformed her into a true soldier. In June 1940, following the Central Committee's directives, Commander Chen implemented a strategic withdrawal, leading the New Fourth Army north to begin a new phase of the anti-Japanese war. Chen Yi's great achievements established in the Mao Mountain area were firmly etched in the hearts of the local people.
