Revolutionary army squad leader Wang and Zhang Qiyun are escorting a donation of fifty thousand yuan across the Gobi Desert when they fall into an ambush set by the local tyrant Dong Shiying of Northwest China. In a bloody battle, Squad Leader Wang sacrifices his life, while Zhang Qiyun is seriously injured and rescued by the wanderer Heituotou, who takes him to the home of Tu Mei. Ningxia local military staff Zhou Haiping and Captain Peng are leading a mule train when they encounter a sandstorm in the Gobi, get lost, and inadvertently enter Tu Mei's house. Zhou Haiping is overcome with lust and lunges at Tu Mei, while Captain Peng has his gun aimed at Heituotou. In a moment of urgency, Zhang Qiyun arrives on horseback, kills the soldiers, and saves Heituotou and Tu Mei. They learn from a seized letter that Ningxia's military governor Ma Fuqiang has sent Zhou Haiping with weapons and a commission to commend Dong Shiying and to bring back the kidnapped fifty thousand yuan. Zhang Qiyun and Heituotou decide to impersonate Zhou and Peng to raid Dong's compound and reclaim the revolutionary army's fifty thousand yuan. However, the two are discovered and captured by Dong Shiying's daughter’s fiancé. Dong Shiying's daughter, Dong Rufen, sympathizes with the revolution and dreams of it, ultimately saving them. Just as Dong Shiying triumphantly leads the mule train away from Dongjiazhuang, Heituotou and hundreds of camels charge forward... Dong Rufen and Zhang Qiyun lead the camels into the distance.
