In 1988, Kalmykia, former Soviet Union. Kirsan Ayushev, a young doctor at a children's hospital, suspects that several of his patients are infected with HIV. His older colleagues do not believe him, so Kirsan secretly sends samples to Moscow. When the test results confirm he is right, scientist Dmitry Goncharov, an "imported" disease expert who is not well known in the Soviet Union, joins the case. Thus, the fate of dozens of children and several adults — possibly even that of an entire country — rests in the hands of epidemiologists in the capital and pediatricians in the provinces.
