In 1945, the Nationalist and Communist forces fought for control of Pingyuan County, Shandong. Nationalist Army 45th Brigade platoon leader Yu Chengshan and soldiers Tu Ga and Cao Gen were captured by the 36th Regiment of the Eighth Route Army. Brigade commander Liao Gaoxuan dispatched a commando team to rescue Yu Chengshan, but the attempt failed. Japan surrendered, and Cao Gen and Tu Ga were genuinely willing to join the Eighth Route Army, while Yu still wanted to return to the Nationalist forces.
