The story takes place in the near future, where artificial intelligence has become all the rage and has naturally faded into distant memory. A couple in New York, Rachel and Alvy, are preparing to take their relationship to the next level and start a family. Rachel's job gives them the opportunity to use a new tool developed by the tech giant Pagasus—a detachable artificial womb, also called the "Egg Chamber," which allows couples to share the experience of pregnancy on a more equal basis. Alvy, a botanist and a devoted purist, is skeptical of this method, but his love for Rachel drives him to take the plunge, and together they embark on a crazy journey into parenthood in this brave new world.
