"Borg/McEnroe" tells the epic story of the 1980 Wimbledon final between Swedish tennis legend Björn Borg (played by Sverrir Gudnason) and the young, passionate American star John McEnroe (played by Shia LaBeouf). The personalities and temperaments of the two players are worlds apart: one is the calm, even cold, epitome of perfection, while the other is a volcano that erupts with fierce inner emotions. But they do share one thing in common: they are both top competitors in the world of tennis. With immersive performances by Sverrir Gudnason, Shia LaBeouf, and Stellan Skarsgård, this sports film carries a psychological thriller feel. Danish director Janus Metz (whose 2010 film "Armadillo" won the Cannes Jury Prize and was also nominated at TIFF that year) recreates the iconic 1980 Wimbledon final between Borg and McEnroe while showcasing the media frenzy surrounding the event and the personal anxieties faced by both players and their respective teams. By 1980, Borg had already won four Wimbledon championships. At 24 years old, he was wildly popular, wealthy, and engaged. However, contrary to his composed public image, he had suffered from anxiety throughout his life. His opponent, McEnroe, hails from New York and is a magician on the court—a whirlwind driven by rage and a desire for perfection. The media and public often belittled and despised McEnroe due to his explosive temperament that could erupt at any moment during matches, often accompanied by foul language directed at umpires and spectators. But McEnroe also endured mental suffering. In what is considered one of the greatest matches in tennis history, both players step onto the court carrying their exquisite skills and inner demons to clash with each other. Amid the tense match and reflective flashbacks, "Borg/McEnroe" excites us not only with the beauty of competition brought by top players but also evokes a resonant theme— the cost of success.
