A flood separates Mio from her childhood friend Noe. After losing her parents, Mio finds herself on the streets, and is taken in by Ah Fang, the owner of a famous Osaka restaurant called Tenman Ittōan, who discovers Mio's exceptional cooking talent. Thus, at the age of 12, Mio begins to learn the culinary arts at Tenman Ittōan. However, a fire soon destroys the restaurant. Mio and the owner move to Edo, where they work at a restaurant called Tsuruy. Initially, Mio's dishes do not appeal to customers and even anger them. Despite receiving comfort from the owner, Mio loses confidence in her cooking skills due to the differences in taste between Osaka and Edo. After several setbacks and guidance from the ronin Komatsubara and Dr. Nagata, Mio realizes the differences in cuisine between Osaka and Edo and makes changes. Her improved dishes receive recognition, but soon other restaurants imitate her, leading Mio to contemplate what her true flavor really is.
