This series is adapted from Taffy Brodesser-Akner's best-selling novel of the same name, with the author herself serving as the screenwriter. The story revolves around Toby Fleishman, a man in his forties who recently separated from his wife. Having married before finishing medical school, he dives into the new world of dating through apps, experiencing a level of success he never had in his youth. Just as he begins his first summer of sexual freedom, his ex-wife Rachel suddenly disappears, leaving their children with him and failing to make any contact after. Toby juggles various aspects of his life—raising his kids, reconnecting with old friends, waiting for a long-anticipated promotion at the hospital, and encountering many women in Manhattan who seem suitable for him. However, he realizes that to understand what happened with Rachel, he must honestly examine their marriage.
