Eleanor Vance, played by Lili Taylor, is a woman approaching middle age whose life is in disarray. She sacrificed her own happiness to care for her ailing mother for over a decade. After her mother's passing, her sister Jan, portrayed by Virginia Madsen, plots to take her property. At a dead end, Eleanor sees a newspaper ad for volunteers for a sleep study and, attracted by the compensation, decides to apply. Under the guidance of the initiator, Professor Marrow, played by Liam Neeson, they arrive at a manor that has been standing for over a hundred years.
