Claire (played by Geraldine Page) has lost her husband, leaving her with nothing but endless pain and a huge debt. In fact, Claire's living situation is quite dire. However, born into a so-called aristocratic family, the vanity-driven Claire does not cut back on her expenses due to financial strain and continues to live a lavish lifestyle as before. So, what is the source of Claire's finances? It turns out that Claire killed the female housekeeper and seized her assets. Dimock (played by Ruth Gordon) becomes the new housekeeper in Claire's home. Unlike the previous housekeeper, Dimock is not only quite eccentric but also seems to know Claire's past very well. Who exactly is this woman?
