In the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China, amidst the chaos of the time, the Liulichang area of old Beijing remained prosperous. Tong Fengquan (played by Zhang Guoli), the owner of the Fan Gu Tang antique shop, is a savvy antique dealer skilled in aging and restoring antiques. However, the industry is rife with scams and deceit, and even a shrewd person like Tong cannot escape being set up and embroiled in mutual betrayals. A Ru kiln three-legged box ultimately leads to the downfall of two antique shops and even causes a death, leaving Tong with nothing. This drastic change in fate brings him into contact with others: Fan Wuye (played by Zhang Tie Lin), a descendant of the Qing Dynasty, uses his past experiences to engage in trading antiques. He values Tong’s restoration skills and is willing to betroth his daughter Mo He (played by Miao Pu) to Tong to pull him into his dealings; after being cast out following the death of the elder, Granny Ru (played by Deng Jie) relies on selling her portable antiques to survive, bringing her closer to Tong; and due to a fake painting, Tong develops enmity with Lan Yigui (played by Wang Gang), the owner of Tianheju. In this tumultuous era, the little people each perform their own tragicomedy of life...
