The film is adapted from the Cantonese opera treasure "Fengge Enchou Weilaoqing" by Mai Bingrong and Phoenix Girl. Princess Yan (played by Gillian Chung) wishes to marry far away and become a royal consort. On her long journey to marry, she develops a rivalry with General Cheng (played by Ram Chiang), who is responsible for escorting her. However, they gradually fall in love. Ignoring the fact that their love is forbidden, they exchange betrothal gifts of a pearl and family heirloom jade for a promise of commitment, only to be ambushed by bandits. In the chaos, Yan accidentally falls off a cliff, and Cheng is captured by the bandits. The pair of lovers becomes separated, each experiencing unexpected adventures. Cheng is taken back to the bandit hideout by their female leader, Zhu San Niang (played by Joey Yung), while Yan survives a great disaster but loses her memory and is rescued by a storyteller named Ling Gankai (played by Wong Cho-lam). General Cheng sets out from the hideout to find the princess, accompanied by the lovesick Zhu San Niang; meanwhile, the amnesiac Princess Yan is living an ordinary life as an unsuccessful scholar who tells stories. One day, when they come together, what kind of story will unfold...
