Young Marie Adler (portrayed by Kaitlyn Dever) reports to the police that she was raped by an intruder in her home, but investigators and those around her doubt the truth of her claim. Meanwhile, hundreds of miles away, detectives Grace Rasmussen and Karen Duvall (played by Emmy winners Toni Collette and Merritt Wever) encounter each other while investigating two very similar rape cases, and they team up to hunt down the elusive serial rapist. This series is adapted from the Pulitzer Prize-winning article "An Unbelievable Story of Rape" published by The Marshall Project and ProPublica (written by T. Christian Miller and Ken Armstrong), as well as the radio episode "Anatomy of Doubt" from This American Life. Directed by Oscar-nominated Susannah Grant and Lisa Cholodenko, the show addresses unspeakable trauma, unwavering determination, and remarkable resilience.
