The story takes place in Shaanxi, where farmer Liu Gaoxing (played by Guo Tao) is a passionate designer of flying vehicles. Due to the pressure of making a living, he comes to Xi'an to work with his good friend Wu Fu (played by Feng Li), settling in a dilapidated warehouse owned by fellow villager Han Dabo (played by Lin Xue). Their neighbors include the hulking man Huang Ba (played by Hai Yitian) and a couple who raise pigs (played by Ba Duo and Miao Pu). Gaoxing's job is scrap collecting; although it's not glamorous, he finds joy in it, and his positive attitude influences Wu Fu and their neighbors. Additionally, when confronted by a small-time thug Shi ReNao (played by Huang Bo), Gaoxing steps up to fight against evil and uphold justice. One day, by chance, Gaoxing meets a massage girl, Meng Yichun (played by Tian Yuan), and sparks of love ignite between them. She has previously made sacrifices to earn money for her brother’s (played by Hu Qinglan) education, having been involved with businessman Wei Da (played by Zhang Zhaohui). Upon learning this, Gaoxing decides to start an active fundraising campaign with his not-so-wealthy friends. However, after they solve this problem, the massage girl ends up in prison due to an accident. Will Gaoxing's love for her continue...? The film is adapted from the novel of the same name by Jia Pingwa, pioneering the first musical comedy genre in mainland China.
