On the eve of the Hundred Regiments Offensive, the anti-Japanese flames are burning across North China. The highest commander of the Japanese army in Cloud City, Xiu Fu, is a war fanatic who vows to destroy the will of all resistors. During a cleaning operation, he notices Gan Yuan, who breaks out of the encirclement after killing Major Notada, and swears to capture him. Gan Yuan escapes from death and encounters his elder brother, Gan Xin, who is leading a small team of Eighth Route Army soldiers on a mission. Unfortunately, they are ambushed by Xiu Fu again, and all the soldiers in Gan Xin's team are sacrificed. To fulfill his brother's dying wish, Gan Yuan decides to go to Cloud City to meet with the underground party and forms a small anti-Japanese team using the escaping laborers. Under the leadership of the underground party member Cai Yun, they blow up copper mines, destroy railways, take down military fortifications, and hijack military trains, accomplishing multiple missions assigned by their superiors, becoming a thorn in Xiu Fu's side. Through numerous battles, each member of the small team gradually grows into qualified Eighth Route Army soldiers, ultimately completing the seemingly impossible task of rescuing imprisoned anti-Japanese activists. The commander of the independent regiment rewards the small team, praising them as soldiers who grew amidst the flames of war.
