In the mid-1980s, America was under Reagan's conservative regime and was experiencing the AIDS crisis. "Angels in America" tells the story of a group of New Yorkers navigating the spaces between life and death, love and sex, heaven and hell, struggling to survive in this social context. Tony Kushner's "Angels in America" is considered one of the most important plays of the past few decades. The play is divided into two parts, totaling over seven hours, and premiered at the National Theatre in London from 1992 to 1993, winning multiple awards including the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The play is interesting and moving, sharp and insightful, exploring themes of love, pain, illness, death, faith, and politics in imaginative ways that remain thought-provoking even 25 years later. This revival features a star-studded cast, with top actors from Hollywood and the British theater scene. Andrew Garfield, who plays the lead role of Prior, received an Oscar nomination for Best Actor, with notable works including "The Amazing Spider-Man" and "Hacksaw Ridge." Other main actors include Denise Gough, the star of the BBC series "Paula," James McArdle, who appeared in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," Russell Tovey from the National Theatre's "The History Boys," and Nathan Lane, known for the musical "The Producers" and the film "The Birdcage." The director, Marianne Elliott, is a dual Olivier and Tony Award winner, and has successfully directed "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time" and "War Horse" at the National Theatre. This time, she has crafted a deeply moving ode to humanity for us.
