The Central Plains in the 1930s. In Jiangli Village, there was a reasonable man named Yang Baishun, whose name meant "everything goes smoothly," yet nothing went well for him. Making tofu, slaughtering pigs, dyeing cloth, and fetching water, Yang Baishun faced obstacles in every trade and was met with constant setbacks. Only the foreign barber priest, Old Zhan, and the widow Wu Xiangxiang could understand him. During the grand lantern festival in Yanjin, Baishun excelled and became famous, winning the heart of Qin Manqing, the daughter of the new school principal. The disparity in their statuses made it difficult for the lovers to unite; Qin Manqing was forced to marry the ruthless new police chief, Gao Deling, while Yang Baishun became a live-in son-in-law at Wu Xiangxiang's home. Wu Xiangxiang's underground lover, Luo Wu, learned about this marriage while in prison, killing a police officer to break out and framing Yang Baishun. From then on, both Baishun and Luo Wu went on the run. Yanjin County Chief Han Jingming was under constant pressure to flatter Commissioner Geng from the provincial government while guarding against Vice County Chief Ding Zihu’s collusion with local gangsters for power, all while secretly hoarding a fortune, living each day on edge. Having seen all sorts of affairs and tasted the bitterness of life, Yang Baishun, accompanied by Qiaoling and a lamp, set out on a journey to find the mother of his child.
