Around 1948, in a common small town in southern China where crumbling walls are everywhere, young woman Zhou Yuwen (played by Wei Wei) lives a dull life with her sick husband Dai Liyan (played by Shi Yu). The war not only robbed Liyan of his family wealth but also took away his faith in life. Yuwen spends her days buying groceries in the morning, taking medicine to Liyan, and after pacing for a long time on the city wall, she returns home, tosses the medicine to him, and exchanges only a few words with him. The rest of her time is spent alone in her sister Dai Xiu's (played by Zhang Hongmei) room, stitching flowers and sighing — this is the only remaining lively place in her view, except for the city wall where she wanders in the morning. The arrival of Zhang Zhichen (played by Li Wei) breaks the stagnant atmosphere. He is an old friend of Liyan but also a former lover of Yuwen. In contrast to Liyan’s gloomy depression, Zhichen is young, healthy, and energetic, which makes Dai Xiu, an outsider in the small town, develop feelings for him. However, Zhichen has never forgotten Yuwen, and he is undoubtedly the longing and call within Yuwen’s heart. When the psychological tug-of-war between Zhichen and Yuwen, filled with hesitation and yearning, plays out, Liyan and Dai Xiu catch a glimpse of the underlying truth.
