In New York's Chinatown, a temperamental, chain-smoking, recently widowed grandmother in her eighties is determined to embark on a new life as an independent woman. However, her son is worried and wants her to move to an upscale neighborhood in Brooklyn to live with his family. A fortune teller near the grandmother's home predicts that she will have incredible luck in the future, prompting her to hop on a bus straight to the casino. She loses at the gambling tables, but on her way home, a large bag of cash unexpectedly falls into her lap. She decides to take the money home. This incident attracts the attention of local gangsters, leading the grandmother to hire a bodyguard for protection and get entangled in local gang conflicts.
