The story tells of Sister Clodagh from a convent in Kolkata, India, who is appointed as the head of the Nunnery at Naini Tal, situated 8,000 feet high in the northern mountains of India, where strong winds blow all year round. Clodagh establishes a school and a hospital, attracting even a young general to receive education. Although Clodagh works diligently to rebuild the nunnery from its ruins and manages it with order, the young nuns, relying solely on self-discipline in the remote mountains, find their spirits challenged by the beautiful yet isolating environment. Under constant temptation, those who cannot persevere have no choice but to abandon their vocations. As the wise have said, only saints and commoners can survive—because living in nature requires self-cultivation or drifting with the tide. Later, incidents occur such as the death of a child and Sister Ruth's fall from grace due to love and hate, leading her to attempt to kill the Mother Superior before tragically falling into a deep ravine. Clodagh ultimately leaves the Nunnery to heal her wounded heart. Related Evaluation Directed by Michael Powell, this film demonstrates the undeniable truth that human nature can change under the influence of its environment. In moments of human fragility, one cannot resist the pressures imposed by their surroundings or the self-control needed to withstand external influences. The film intricately portrays the subtle struggles within the characters, and the actors embody the various roles exceptionally well.
