A Hanified Thao person named Ah Ming, unable to resolve his sense of belonging, returns to his childhood hometown with intentions of suicide but is saved by an elderly Thao man who takes him in at a riverside chicken coop. The elderly man's son, A-Jiang, dreams of venturing out to Taipei, while the old man insists on remaining in the village, leading to a silent conflict between them. A city-sophisticated hostess named Xiumi, who has deceived a wealthy landlord out of a large sum of money and fled back to the village seeking a husband, finds her lifelong partner in her childhood close friend A-Jiang, intensifying his struggle to leave home. The wealthy landlord from Taipei, duped by Xiumi, sends two brothers from the underworld to the village to find her. With nowhere to hide, Xiumi ends up spending a night in Ah Ming's chicken coop. A-Jiang, jealous of the relationship between Xiumi and Ah Ming, drives Ah Ming to an abandoned cave where no one lives. In the cave, Ah Ming observes bats in their dwelling and gains insights into life's truths, learning a secret about his biological father from the elderly Thao man.
