The story takes place in England in 1934, where Philby (Toby Stephens), Burgess (Tom Hollander), and Maclean (Rupert Penry-Jones) are three promising young men studying at Cambridge University. They are recruited by the Soviet overseas intelligence agency to become spies, forming what would later be known as the Cambridge Spy Ring. These three ambitious young men view the Soviet Union as fertile ground for realizing their political ideals. After the outbreak of World War II, the members of the spy ring are hired by the British government, providing countless valuable intelligence to the Soviets throughout the war, thereby influencing the course of the conflict in unseen ways. In 1951, Burgess and Maclean fled to the Soviet Union after their identities were exposed, leaving Philby to endure immense pressure as he faced a harsh investigation from the British government.
