Young Claude (played by John Savage), hailing from Oklahoma, leaves home to enlist in the military and meets four hippie friends: George (Treat Williams), Lafayette, Woof, and Sheila. They spend time on the streets, using drugs and sleeping rough. Claude falls in love at first sight with Sheila (Beverly D'Angelo), a wealthy girl. To bring them together, George leads the group to crash a party at Sheila's house, which results in their arrest. After being bailed out, George raises money while their friends in jail revolt against cutting their long hair. After being released, the five attend an anti-war rally where Claude and Sheila ignite a romantic spark. However, the next day, Claude joins the military to prepare for the Vietnam War. Sheila and the others drive thousands of kilometers to visit Claude, leading to a twist in Claude and George’s identities on the eve of the troops’ deployment... This film won the Best Director and Best Score awards at the 1979 David di Donatello Awards.
