The Danish prince Hamlet (Laurence Olivier) experiences the mysterious death of his father in the garden. The king's brother, Claudius, ascends to the throne and marries the former queen, Hamlet's mother. The sudden demise of his father, along with his mother's remarriage, leaves Hamlet in deep sorrow. One day, Hamlet's friend Horatio informs him that at midnight, a sorrowful and vengeful ghost appears on the castle battlements. Hamlet goes to the battlements at midnight to meet his father’s ghost, who reveals that he was murdered by the current king, Claudius. The ghost demands that Hamlet take revenge on the usurper who stole his throne and married his wife. Burdened by the task of revenge, Hamlet decides to feign madness to disguise his intent and spy on Claudius's actions. However, his indecisiveness prevents him from killing his uncle. Just as he hesitates, a troupe of actors arrives at the court. He arranges for a play that reenacts the murder of the king. The reactions of the king and queen confirm for him the existence of the court conspiracy...
