The story begins in the UK in 2000, where Joan (Judi Dench) is enjoying a pleasant retirement in the picturesque countryside. Although Joan appears to be just an elegant and dignified elderly woman, her true identity is that of a military spy. One day, an agent from MI5 knocks on Joan's door, shattering her peaceful life.
