The story begins in the UK in 2000, where Joan (Judi Dench) is enjoying a pleasant retirement in the picturesque countryside. Although Joan appears to be just an elegant and dignified elderly woman, her true identity is that of a military spy. One day, an agent from MI5 knocks on Joan's door, shattering her peaceful life. The timeline rewinds to 1930, when Joan (Sophie Cookson) is a physics student at Cambridge University. By chance, she meets a Russian man named Leo (Tom Hughes), and they quickly fall in love. Under Leo's influence, Joan starts to pay attention to the world's dynamics and realizes that history has reached a turning point, with military hegemonic behavior already permeating every aspect of her life. Angered, Joan decides to resist.
