In 1940, the Disney company produced its third feature-length animated film, "Fantasia," contributing a classic masterpiece to animation history that remains difficult to match to this day. The film consists of eight musical shorts, the earliest of which, "The Sorcerer's Apprentice," tells the amusing story of Mickey Mouse, an apprentice to the sorcerer Yensid (Disney spelled backwards), who steals his master's hat and uses magic to animate brooms to fetch water, causing a great disaster. The film was originally intended to be included in the "Silly Symphonies" series, but due to severe budget overruns and financial losses, Disney decided to combine several classic musical pieces into a collection of musical shorts for release. However, due to its overly artistic nature and factors such as World War II, "Fantasia" did not achieve the expected revenue. Besides Dukas' "The Sorcerer's Apprentice," the film features music by Bach's "Toccata and Fugue in D minor," Tchaikovsky's "The Nutcracker," Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring," Beethoven's "Pastoral Symphony," Ponchielli's "Dance of the Hours," Mussorgsky's "Night on Bald Mountain," and Schubert's "Ave Maria." This film won two Academy Awards for Special Achievement (Music and Sound Technology) at the 14th Oscars.
