In the 1950s, after World War II, Japan was in ruins and in need of revival. Many young and talented individuals aspiring to become manga artists gathered in Tokyo, eager to create works beloved by children. Living in poverty, they arrived at Tokiwako, a sanctuary for manga artists headed by Osamu Tezuka, with Hiroshi Terada (Masahiro Motoki) being one of them. Nearby were other artists like Sugao Anzubuko (Takuro Suzuki), Hiroshi Fujimoto (Sadao Abe) (who would later share the pen name "Fujiko Fujio"), Shotaro Ishinomori (Koji Sato), and Fujio Akatsuka (Yoshiyuki Omori). Although life was tough, they persevered for their shared dream... This film is based on the true history of the Japanese manga industry. Tokiwako, located in the Minami-Nagasaki area of Toshima, Tokyo, was established in 1952 and was torn down and rebuilt in 1982 due to aging. Known as the god of manga, Osamu Tezuka was one of the first residents, and it became a hub for young manga artists, with as many as seven or eight artists living and working there at one time.
