In the eyes of her colleagues, Lucy (Renée Zellweger) is a decisive businesswoman and also a ruthless person who will do anything to achieve her goals. In Lucy's view, nothing is important, including poor relationships and a barren emotional life, as long as she can thrive at work; she can enjoy life without guilt. On an assignment, Lucy is sent to a small town in Minnesota. Although she is reluctant to take on this "bad job," the thought of using this assignment as a stepping stone for promotion makes all difficulties seem trivial. At first, everything in the small town feels dull to Lucy, but over time, she finds that everything she couldn't stand gradually becomes endearing. Moreover, in this town, Lucy meets a man named Ted (Harry Connick Jr.), whose presence makes her start to rethink what she truly wants.
