Louis (played by Jean Paul Belmondo) is a very wealthy tobacco factory owner who buys a "mail-order bride" from abroad. Little does he know that the woman, Julie (played by Catherine Deneuve), who appears before him is incredibly beautiful, and Louis feels he has struck gold. However, he soon finds himself entangled in the web that Julie has spun.
