Louis (played by Jean Paul Belmondo) is a very wealthy tobacco factory owner who buys a "mail-order bride" from abroad. Little does he know that the woman, Julie (played by Catherine Deneuve), who appears before him is incredibly beautiful, and Louis feels he has struck gold. However, he soon finds himself entangled in the web that Julie has spun. As time goes on, Louis gradually discovers that behind Julie lies a succession of unsolvable mysteries, and he cannot even be sure if she is the woman he initially decided to purchase. Eventually, Julie reveals her true self, absconding with Louis's wealth, but by this time, Louis is already infatuated with her. He decides that no matter how treacherous she may be, he will follow her to the ends of the earth.
