Michelle Darnell (Kristen Wiig) believes that there's probably no one else in this world as unsuccessful as she is. Once hailed as a genius screenwriter, she has squandered her talent through indulgence and playfulness, and at the age of twenty-three, still has not accomplished anything. She decides to self-direct and star in a "fake suicide" script, hoping to win back her boyfriend with her clumsy acting. After her plan fails, Michelle is sent to her mother Zelda (Annette Bening) for compulsory guardianship. However, Zelda isn't much better off; she's a heavy drinker and gambler. Together, this mother-daughter duo is a recipe for disaster. Fortunately, Zelda's tenant, Lee (Darren Criss), is a reliable young man, and as time passes, Michelle's relationship with Lee grows closer.
