The film focuses on the changes in public square dancing in Chinese society from the Cultural Revolution to today, tracing the current popular square dance back to its origins in the "Zhongzi Dance" of the Cultural Revolution. The three protagonists include Mr. Zhou, who bravely resisted during the Cultural Revolution and is still capable of doing handstands at 74; Mr. Xiong, whose marriage is on the brink of collapse and who takes care of his 105-year-old father daily, seeking surface-level sexual stimulation through constantly changing dance partners to relieve the pressure of caregiving, ultimately saying goodbye to his father in silence; and Ms. Yin, a 63-year-old former Red Guard leader, who reflects with tears on her youthful folly and ultimately realizes her lifelong dream through persistent effort, culminating in a dance performance in Los Angeles, fulfilling her dream. They all danced the "Zhongzi Dance" during the Cultural Revolution and are active participants in square dancing today. This film connects them through square dance and uses the evolution of dancing in the square as a dramatic reflection of nearly 50 years of historical changes in China. The documentary DANCE ON THE SQUARE tells the story of the 3 heroes who dance on the square from the period Cultural Revolution to today. They are old enough now. The story is about the 3 old people realizing their last dream of life, reflecting the huge impact of the dramatically political changes on people's spiritual aspirations through nearly 50 years of dance changes on the Chinese square.
