The film is based on true events and influenced by John Osborne's novel, depicting the rise and eventual self-destruction of an Austrian soldier who climbs the ranks by any means necessary on the eve of World War I. Colonel Redl comes from a poor background, is a Jew, and is homosexual, and he must conceal all of these aspects in order to advance in the Austro-Hungarian army. However, no matter how much he suppresses his true self, some still see him as an outsider intruding into others' worlds.
