The story takes place in 17th century France, where Anna (played by Angela Lansbury) inadvertently gives the jewelry gifted to her by the king (played by Frank Morgan) to her lover, the Duke of Buckingham. Minister Richelieu discovers this and sees it as a perfect opportunity to further his ambitions. D'Artagnan (played by Gene Kelly), an ordinary young man eager to join the king's Musketeers, meets three Musketeers—Athos (played by Van Heflin), Porthos (played by Gig Young), and Aramis (played by Robert Coote)—by chance. D'Artagnan joins their company, and the four set out for England to recover the Duke of Buckingham's jewelry before the king discovers the truth.
