In the third year of Showa (1928), Hisako Oishi (played by Hideko Takamine) began teaching at a branch of Shodoshima Elementary School. Riding a new type of bicycle and dressed in a suit, Ms. Oishi brought a breath of fresh air to this impoverished village, and the 12 students at the branch took a liking to her. One day, Oishi fell into a pit dug by the children and sprained her ankle. During her recovery, the 12 children walked eight miles to visit her. As Oishi returned to the main school due to her injury, she faced disdain from colleagues for her skeptical attitude during the rise of militarism. As the war progressed, some of the 12 students who had transferred to the main school joined the military. Oishi's doubts about militaristic education deepened, and she eventually chose to resign and return home to support her husband and raise children. After the war, Ms. Oishi returned to the branch school, gazing at the unfamiliar and innocent faces in the classroom, recalling the different fates of the 12 children from back then, and finally shedding tears…
