Maximus Decimus Meridius (played by Russell Crowe) is a celebrated and beloved general of the Roman Empire. The aging king Marcus Aurelius (played by Richard Harris) holds the general in high esteem and intends to crown him. This favoritism from the king naturally arouses jealousy and insecurity in his son Commodus, who seizes the opportunity to murder his father, take the throne for himself, and immediately orders the execution of the general's family. Maximus narrowly escapes the tyrant's grasp, but all of his family is unable to avoid the massacre. Upon returning home, he finds it in ruins. With no options left, Maximus is forced into slavery, falling from the status of a general to that of a gladiator, struggling to survive amidst bloody battles. Through his courage and exceptional combat skills, Maximus gradually stands out and rises to the grand gladiatorial arena in Rome. This time, his sword is aimed directly at the tyrant Commodus. The pain of losing his loved ones and the humiliation of being made a slave ignite a fierce anger within Maximus.
